It began easily enough.

I rode into the lion’s den, which seemed fitting for someone nicknamed the Lion of Ruttenburg even if I loathed that moniker. It was not an event for which I wanted or required a verbal reminder.

The Dai Shimeron guards brought me before their king immediately. King Belal looked amused when I offered him my sword and my services. I was certain he’d lock me up. In truth, I would have preferred it.

Instead, with his chin perched on the back of his hand, he watched me. His gaze was as tactile as if he were running those long fingers of his across my skin. I repressed the shudder that tried to escape, remaining motionless before him.

Of course he was amused. Why shouldn’t he be? I was a Weller—once rightful heir to the Dai Shimeron throne. I was a half-breed without rights or respect in most lands including this one. I was a prince of Shin Makoku and loyal servant of the Maou.

“Welcome,” was his only response. Then with a wave of his other hand, guards were leading me away again. I stepped into a dining room which I had quite expected to be an interrogation chamber if not simply the dungeon. A plate and goblet were set before me and men with weapons observed me as I ate in silence. It had been several years since I’d been in Dai Shimeron, but the flavors were still familiar. If I had been of a mind to enjoy the food, I would have.

Later, I was given a stately room that did not rival the quarters in Blood Pledge castle, but was also not shamed by them. Clearly, someone had already put some effort into my arrival. My closet was stocked with uniforms and a few other articles of clothing. I opened one drawer to find toiletries and other necessities. The next contained undergarments. I touched the red silk and could not help but be reminded of Yuuri’s shock when Gunter showed him the royal underwear.

Closing the drawer quickly, I decided there was no need for underwear. I’d never particularly seen the purpose anyway.

Evening had passed into night as I lay on my new bed surrounded by my new furnishings and clenching my new fist—none of which felt even remotely like they were mine. It was for the best. My father lived his life never attached to objects or places—linked to people, yes, but never tethered to them. He was a happier man than I’ve ever been despite the smile.

That might be what felt the strangest in that strange place. I had abandoned the smile I wore as readily as the sword at my hip.

The hour had grown from late to early as utter stillness settled upon the lands outside my window. Sleep was evading me, but it mattered little. The knob of my door clicked and twisted before the large, wooden plank swung slowly open. I could make out the faces of two men in the candle light and the forms of at least another two behind them.

There was no struggle. I walked with them as they escorted me through the halls and again I was surprised by where I found myself. I was in the throne room again. The expansive room echoed with our footfalls. This time there was only King Belal and the guards who had attended me in attendance.

With a nod of his head the other men moved back into the shadows. They could not be seen, but I felt their eyes upon me.

Belal delivered no lengthy speech about testing my loyalty. He did not offer me an ultimatum and there were no threats of force. I didn’t need to hear the words to know it was my test.

I had come this far, and it was already too late to go back, so when he asked me to remove my clothes I did so without question or pause.

When he told me to kneel before him—I felt the thick carpet cushion my knees.

When his fingers curled into my hair and coaxed my head into his lap—I did not struggle.

I knew why I was in the throne room and not his bed chambers or the dungeon. He wanted to be surrounded by all his trappings of power as he stripped me of mine.

The thing is, Conrad would do anything for Yuuri - like get his arm cut off. So even if Conrad loses his dignity, I think he could live with that. That's why this fic was totally believable.
