Where the Heart is
Challenge: Aki - “home”

Days passed into weeks and weeks passed into months and somehow time and life just kept spinning with the addition of the doubles. The question of when they would return home and how eventually faded from everyone’s lips completely. It was like a dull pain you couldn’t quite pinpoint or a forgotten memory that occasionally nagged to be remembered at the right trigger but was easily lost in the merest of distractions.

Life went on as it always had. Some fell in love, some became invaluable members of society, and regrettably some even died.

But for one man who stood vigil over the setting sun the question was alive and well and squarely placed in the forefront of his mind. His life was not entirely unpleasant. He had formed many enjoyable relationships among the people of this world. He was especially fond of the time he spent with Ulrike. He had even been able to reach an understanding with his own double that kept things more or less peaceful.

But none of that made his desire to return home any less pressing. It wasn’t the place that was so terribly important. He did worry about his world and its people, but he had faith in them to survive and even thrive in his absence.

The thing that made Aki different was that home had never actually been a place for him. It wasn’t even something abstract and indefinable. It had dimension and form and a beautiful spirit he burned to feel next to him again.

Home was Edwyn, and no matter how much time passed and how many other people he met, his desire to return to his home never wavered--never lessened.

Joy
Challenge: OOC Alford - “joy”

It took a long time to realize what that feeling that raced through his body every time he heard those three little words strung together so simply yet so elegantly by his double’s clever lips was.

It was the feeling that made him run away. It was too good, too perfect, too fleeting, and too precious. It scared him and thrilled him at the same time with its strange newness.

It was also the emotion that kept him returning to his double night after night no matter how far he had run or whom he had spent his days with.

It was overwhelming and beautiful and so much more than he ever expected. And yet it was decidedly odd that a man who spent his entire life trying to make others happy should be so surprised and confused at experiencing joy for the first time.

Love Reflected
Tribble: OOC Alford x IC Alford - “love”

Nibai always asked why.

Alford could tell him a dozen times a day how beautiful and kind he was. He could tell and even show him how much he loved him, but it never stuck--it was never enough. Still, his double would stare up at him with those confused, familiar eyes and ask, “Why?”

Why had Alford comforted him? Why had he stayed beside him? Why had he held him after the nightmares? Why had he protected him from a jealous lover? Why did he want someone who felt so totally unworthy of everything so freely offered to him?

But no matter how many times he was asked; the answer never changed, never wavered, and never once hesitated. Alford loved the other man whose face was so strikingly familiar and yet totally his own. “Because I love you.”

The words always had an effect. Sometimes his double would suddenly find something else he needed to do. Other times he would just become very quiet and look away. Recently, it was more likely he would distract them both with a kiss that almost always led to more.

It had taken years for such reactions to stop hurting. He wanted to hear Nibai say he loved him, even if he’d never admit it. Then he realized his double had been telling him. He told him in the way he always came back to him no matter how far he strayed. He told him in the way he would cling to him when he fervently denied being afraid or upset. And he told him in his ever-so-gentle way of kissing.

Maybe he’d never hear the words fall from Nibai’s lips, but his eyes shouted their love with every glance and it was more than enough.

Sight Beyond Sight
Challenge: OOC Alford x Alana (IC Alford as a woman) - “sight”

The room was falling away. It didn’t matter that the door wasn’t latched. It didn’t matter that Gwendal and Murata could return at any moment. She couldn’t think. She could only feel--his hands, his tongue, his breath, and that hard bulge pressing against her stomach.

That last feeling jarred something awake inside her mind. She wasn’t complete. She wasn’t herself. She wasn’t...a she.

“Nibai, stop,” she said in a shaking voice. Alana could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She didn’t want to worry her double, but she was so deeply confused. How did she become a woman? Would she ever be normal again? And how could Nibai stand to touch her now?

“Al?” He wrapped his arms around her shoulders as they trembled with gentle sobbing. “What’s wrong? Did I...”

The female Alford pushes out of his warm, comforting grip before he can finish blaming himself. If she allowed him continue they would be back to where they had been. And she couldn’t let him do that just to make her feel better. “Are you just being nice to me? You can’t really want me now, can you?” She meant it to be more of a statement than a question, but the pleading in her tone was clear.

“Al, I...I don’t understand.”

She watched him hesitate, seemingly wanting to touch her again but unsure if he should. Her throat felt dry. She knew she was upsetting Nibai, but she couldn’t help it. And there was that sweet innocence of his again. It was so strangely attractive and yet it was only making her angry. It was obvious why things were wrong, wasn’t it?

“I’m not the same as I was. I’m all wrong now! Can’t you see that?!” She choked out the desperate confession and then buried her face in her hands as the tears came unbidden. When Nibai wrapped his strong, male arms around her she didn’t have the strength to push him away again.

“I see you. I see the beautiful person you have always been. I am honored to be with you now as I have always been.”

Alana’s eyes opened and peered up at her double. She wanted to believe him. “Really?”

Nibai smiled and kissed away her tears. “Really.” He held her for a long time. For once, the male Alford made no advancements. He was content to let his female counterpart just lie in his embrace until she was ready to move forward.

“Nibai, there is something I don’t understand,” her tears had stopped and a smile was already threatening to creep out of hiding.

“What is it?”

“If we have the same eyes, then why is it that yours work so much better?” Her reply was given in lips upon lips instead of spoken words. They understood each other beyond the need for words. She had just lost sight of that for a moment.
