The loneliness was the hardest part. It wasn't the loneliness of separation either, although he did often leave for long stretches at a time, sometimes without even a word or explanation before or after. It was the loneliness in the distance between them as they'd share tea, conversation or even a mat.

She was a stubborn woman. Her friends had been clear enough on that point more than once. So, there were times when she'd ask herself if she was just too stubborn to leave.

Then he'd smile in that gentle way of his, and she knew she never would.

Oh, this one is definitely with Kenshin. ^^ I stuck with canon. And it really wasn't so much that I liked Sano/Kaoru as that I loved Sano.
