Wolf Cub

His advisor told him such a plan would surely fail. Belal would have liked to show the man proof of his error, but he had already been punished and his widow richly compensated for the tragic loss.

Belal understood something that his advisor was too banal to comprehend. Half-breeds instinctively trusted their own kind. So, even after Till’s betrayal, another had been sent to infiltrate Shin Makoku. He had reported on many things involving the various doubles within the castle. He kept a close eye on the errant consort and his mongrel lover.

The loss of so many soldiers, the failure to obtain a box, and Conrad’s escape had cost him dearly. Steps had to be taken to save face before his court. Times had been less than pleasant for all those involved. His staff would have liked nothing better than to see their lord’s obsession with the Weller line extinguished.

But to the contrary it had only burned more hotly as it seemed to ever exceed his grasp. That is, until he obtained his newest prized possession. It had cost him his newly planted spy. But he had managed to retrieve a child with that same graceful face and doe-like eyes as Conrad’s. Indeed, as impossible as it was to believe, the reports claimed that the child was in fact the former self of Conrad’s other worldly double.

Belal did not pretend to understand such ridiculous fantasy. Perhaps the child was Conrad and perhaps he was not, but when he welcomed the boy into his home he knew without a doubt he was a Weller.

The human king watched in amusement as the impertinent youth defended himself from the attendants assigned to care for him. He looked forward to tempering that flame, controlling it.

Perhaps he would not have his consort, but he would have the man’s son. He would teach him and spoil him as no half-breed could dare dream. It would take time to break the child of his “kyodai’s” influence, but not so much as one might think. He was still just a boy and very impressionable. With a firm hand Belal would mold him and care for him until he has this boy’s trust.

He begins by taking away the child’s addiction to the name “Conrart.” It does not suit Belal’s tongue. He chooses Yongst instead. He gives young Yongst all the possessions a boy of his age may covet, but just like any child his favorite plaything is as simple as a box.

Belal made certain it was scrubbed and disinfected thoroughly first. A smile played on his face as the sandy haired Yongst would peek over the boxes’ edge with those wide, expressive eyes.

The king’s fingers brushed over the boy’s soft cheek and he smiled down at his Yongst. He beamed with pride as the boy howled at his behest. Yes, this one would make a much better wolf than a lion.
