Secrets of the Heart

Conrad loved Yuuri and a few select others.

His life was dedicated to duty.

To his Maou.

To the Shinou.

To his family.

And when time allowed, to himself.

There were times when another’s eyes rolled over him, that he wondered if they were judging him for his time in Dai Shimeron or for the sheer fact he’d been born with the yoke of two races tied around his neck. It seemed his loyalty would always be in question.

There were times he questioned it himself. Times when he wanted to show them all the real Lion of Ruttenburg.

But still he smiled. And still he attended his duties.

Yuuri loved everyone with a few, select exceptions.

Black eyes shone with more light than one might have thought possible. He would walk about his castle—never feeling ownership over the place—gazing in wonder at everything and everyone.

Some things were odd and confusing like many of the diningware-based rituals and the way the maids would burst into giggles at the sight of him talking to someone else. And other things made perfect sense like Gwendal baking cookies with Greta.

Okay, the apron may have been a little confusing, but the gesture was simple and sweet.

Or the way Wolfram would call him names, but then also cast little glances his way when he thought Yuuri wasn’t looking. Or how Conrad would always make time for him even if it was just to play catch.

He wondered how he’d been gifted with the ability—he hoped—to keep them all safe and close.

Belal loved power and carefully selected those who would share his time.

The human king wanted nothing around him that displeased his sensibilities whether it was a faded drapery or an ugly servant. But he possessed class and charm enough to earn him the devotion of his subjects.

He was not a king who could be accused of not knowing his people. He knew them all too well. He could manipulate and control everyone within his lands in one way or another and without them being any the wiser.

It was a comfortable situation for him, but he wanted more. He needed more. There was one who had slipped his grasp—a little lamb who had abandoned his flock before his time.

Conrad.

He’d have him returned. He’d have him submissive and pliable. He’d break him in every way and rebuild him into something of his own design. His half breed would make such a lovely trophy and his people would cheer for their benevolent king and his new husband.
