Blood

Blood is red. He’s always thought of it as a bright red--something vibrant like fire. He liked that idea--fire running through his veins the way the fire maryoku coursed through him.

But this was different. It wasn’t at all like he always imagined it. The blood was red, yes, but it was dark and burnt looking. It was like liquid ashes pouring over pale flesh. And it was everywhere. There was so much--so many bodies, so much blood, so full of death.

And the stench. Gods! He felt his stomach churn violently within him, trying to expel the foul, thick air, but all he could do was suck more inside. It felt like it was becoming part of him like he was drinking in the death and decay into his small frame.

He took a quick step backward, trying to escape the scene but there was something beneath his boot. There was a sickening cracking and then it was soft and he was falling on the uneven surface.

Falling into the bodies.

Falling into the stench.

Falling into that cold, dark blood.

Nononononononononononononononono! “NO!”

Frightened, green eyes shot open to meet passive violet. “Next time I trust you will not use your powers against others so frivolously.”

And with that statement, the Shinou withdrew from the room, leaving Rufus lying on the floor, breath coming in quick gulps until his pulse settled back down.

It seemed cruel and unnecessary for his cousin to show him that world--that segment of his own past that he wasn’t present for. The final battle was more horrific than he ever could have imagined. But Alarik was right. He had no intention of attacking anyone again without knowing it was absolutely necessary.

But he still wasn’t about to apologize to his bizarre double anytime soon. How dare he wear such a noble, striking face while acting in such a foolish manner?
