At first, Conrad never smiled. He was lost in every way a man could be.
Jose smiled more to carry the load. He was a good talker and a good listener. He tried to draw Conrad out, but he was silent most of the time, allowing Jose to chatter away as he pleased.
But there was one night with no words—just the slapping of skin and the soft grunts of completion. And it never happened again.
The caretakers of the sun and the moon were not like their charges. They had regrets.
But that night was not one of them.
