Without shielding the average Mazoku felt just one thing from houseki--a painful, persistent, draining loss of energy. With Anissina’s creation that sensation was abated, if not removed. The benefit--other than not dropping to your knees before the enemy--was the ability to feel more distinction in the energy of the human’s stones.

The ice stone tasted of cold mint and chilled the spine like an early frost. Spirit was like a low-frequency humming that seemed to rumble through your chest and almost chatter the teeth. And fire was like biting into a hot chili pepper and washing it down with smoldering embers from the hearth.

Fire was the stone that tore into Anissina’s arm as she sat, bound and naked before the less than gentle mercies of her world’s Yozak. He was good with houryouku--a sadistic master of torture. And the fire stone sang brilliantly with his guidance. He could carve into her as precisely as a surgeon or hack away with the brute force of an axe-wielding super soldier. He did both and everything in between by the time he was through.

So, it was fire that pained her the most when she felt its energies being awakened and unleashed. The merest flicker of that energy warmed her shoulder and sent pins and needles dancing through her nervous system even with the shielding. Once a Mazoku has been poisoned with that energy there is no way to fully reverse its effects. It changes you forever. Her own powers were altered by the experience. The spirit energy that was once so pure and brilliant had become a strange scorched version of its previous self. It was no weaker, simply altered and unlike any other’s. It was not the only way in which she had been changed forever.

Knowing all of this, what brought her to this hillside where Shin Mazoku half blood soldiers were training with the dangerous stones? Why risk the fatigue and anguish they cause even with her protection?

Simple. Because Conrad asked her to be there.

How long had it been since she came to this world? How long since the rescue mission that retrieved Conrad? How long since he regained his confidence and standing in the castle? A lifetime ago. A different Anissina with a different outlook had walked those paths.

How many Anissinas did that make? How many times had her life dissolved into ashes before she could remake herself--changed but strong? It didn’t matter. There would be as many as it took. But she liked this one. This one had a beautiful and talented healer for a wife. This one worked out each morning with her best friend, Yozak. This one assisted her unofficially adopted little brother as he ran the Yuuri-approved houseki drills a safe distance away from the castle.
